Day 5 (Roman Ruins of Ostia Antica)

"Today we'll gain a new perspective on this ancient city. We'll tour the ancient Mediterranean seaport of Ostia Antica before returning to the city along the historic Appian Way. Your dinner and evening are on your own. Bus: 3 hrs."

Today we had a trip out of Rome to the ancient port town of Ostia Antica. We spent about 1 1/2 hours on a bus to get there. I have to say that I have heaps of respect for our bus driver. This was a pretty large bus and he maneuvered it through some of the tightest places I have ever seen!

Ostia Antica was great. A very peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the big city. The perfect thing for Thanksgiving day! We toured all morning then had lunch at the cafeteria onsite. The food was really good! I had some roasted potatoes and some chicken in a red sauce with olives and peppers. Cammie had some of the roasted potatoes and some breaded chicken.

After lunch we loaded up on the bus and went to the modern town of Ostia to see the Mediterranean! This was the first of our three surprises that Cecillia had in store for us today.

After leaving the beach we then went on another one of Cecilia's surprises for us the San Callisto Catacombs.

We went back to the hotel and Cecillia had the last of our Thanksgiving surprises for us. She gave everyone a half bottle of wine from her family estate and an Arancini, a ragu filled rice ball that is deep fried (very good!).

It had been a long day so we called it a night early.
